4 Changes Edge Computing Field Will Undergo in 2020

With the advent of the 5G and the Internet of Everything (IoE) era, the number of connected smart terminals will rapidly increase. As a result, the centralized storage and computing model of traditional cloud computing centers can no longer meet the demands of terminal devices for timeliness, capacity, and computing power. To cope with this, cloud computing capabilities will be delivered to edge nodes and terminals. Unified delivery, O&M, and management through the center will be an important development trend in the cloud computing field.
IDC predicts that, by 2020, more than 50 billion terminals and devices will be connected to the Internet, and more than 40% of data will be analyzed, processed, and stored at the edge of the network. This means that edge computing will face many new scenarios and evolve in infinite ways.
As we enter the new decade, we predict that the edge computing field will undergo the following changes in 2020:
- With the rapid development of Kubernetes-based cloud native technology in recent years, great strides have been made in its application scope, application scenarios, and technical maturity. One of its core advantages is to provide consistent functions and experience in the cloud and any other infrastructure through unified standards. By combining cloud native technology with edge computing, you can quickly distribute applications that achieve cloud-edge-terminal integration. This provides a solution for unified large-scale application delivery, maintenance, and control on a large number of edge and terminal devices.
- In terms of security, cloud native technology can provide more secure workload operating environments, such as containers, as well as throttling and network policies, which can effectively improve the security of edge services and edge data.
- In an edge network environment, edge container capabilities based on cloud native technology can ensure the autonomy of weak and disconnected networks and provide effective self-recovery capabilities. This solution is also compatible with complex network access environments.
- With the support of the powerful communities and vendors in the cloud native field, cloud native technology is becoming more applicable to heterogeneous resources. In the IoT field, cloud native technology already supports a variety of CPU architectures and communication protocols, with low resource consumption.
At present, many vendors have got their hands on cloud native edge computing, and some of them have been successful. We believe that the rapid development of 5G in 2020 will accelerate the application of cloud-native edge computing.
