In 2016, we turned our attention to our self-developed cloud-based databases. We now provide an extensive range of data management services for businesses worldwide, which in turn, improve cyber security, enable disaster recovery and provide robust support.
Since 2009, the Double 11 Global Shopping Festival has taken place annually on November 11. Every year, it sets new standards for the global e-commerce industry, continually generating record breaking revenues and creating an innovative retail experience for consumers.
In 2019, our database services enabled 42 million database requests per second, more than one million queries per request and 50,000 queries per second of real-time monitor and data storage. At the end of the event, 970PB of data had been processed and close to 1.3 billion orders were generated.
The Technology behind the Event
Our database services are provided under the ApsaraDB umbrella. Each offering delivers a service to automatically and continuously manage and monitor your database health and hardware securely.
These solutions, “ensured that networks and systems were scaled to process during Double 11, especially during the unpredictable traffic spikes, without incident,” explains Alibaba Senior Director, Wu Zeming.
The event has grown substantially over the last decade, with increasing data read and write requests threatening to affect database performance. So, Alibaba Cloud supports read-only instances for better database performance. Our Automatic Read/Write Splitting technology also splits SQL requests and managed load balancing automatically. This automation meant we did not need to manually modify or decipher read/write layers, eliminating high cost and latency issues.
Elasticity is another key requirement for such a large-scale event, and one that our database team achieved by using a hybrid server environment in the 2019 event
By deploying online and offline hybrid servers, the daily offline tasks could be executed on online (application and database) servers, while the online applications for the 11.11 event used offline computing resources.
By isolating the storage and computing resources, the database could use offline computing resources during Double Eleven, supporting excellent elasticity. By using cloud resources and the hybrid deployment technology, the cost of the peak transaction traffic during Double Eleven 2019 was also minimized.
For the Double 11 2019 event, our next-generation ApsaraDB for PolarDB also provided the performance and availability of traditional enterprise databases and the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of open source databases.
POLARDB is compatible with MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle, supporting up to 100TB of data. It automatically adjusts the storage space based on your requirements, which is a key feature for the fast performance, high concurrency and automatic scaling required by events like Double 11.
With sales hitting a record USD $38.6 billion in 24 hours, 544,000 transactions per second at peak time and more than six billion cyber-attacks successfully averted, the cloud-based technologies being the Alibaba Double 11 Global Shopping Festival provided the required elasticity, interactivity and security for this year’s event to surpass its predecessors.
